Matt Wardlaw

Hey there K-Rock citizens. It’s Matt. That’s me on the left with Simon LeBon of Duran Duran, but hopefully you figured the Simon part out. You can hear me each and every Saturday morning from 10am until 3pm on 92.3 K-Rock. I also contribute music news, a weekly concert calendar, and general tomfoolery to the Inner Sanctum on Sunday nights at 10pm with Pat the Producer and Jim Benson. Beyond that, if you keep your ears peeled, you might hear me randomly on other days, because I’m sneaky like that!
From the time I was very little, I always wanted to be in radio. I visited my first radio station at age 7, and saw MTV (back when they played videos) for the very first time. I was hooked and there was no turning back. I worked in record stores during high school and discovered that free CDs and concert tickets are a lot of fun. From there, my first radio station job was at the station that I grew up listening to, and it doesn’t get much cooler than that! I’ve been at 92.3 K-Rock doing one thing or another for 5 years now, and I still love every moment of it.
In my spare time, I love listening to music, hanging out with friends and going to shows, and writing for a number of different outlets, including Scene Magazine. I’m also all about road trips, and I am on a continual quest to find the next great record store. This ongoing journey leads me to different cities and states, and I manage to find a good record store in each of them. Support your local independent record store!
FAVORITE CONCERTS:
I went to over 150 concerts last year, so I guess I still like going to shows. Here are some of my favorite shows from over the years: Virgin Festival in Baltimore (2007) with The Police, Beastie Boys, Smashing Pumpkins, Fountains of Wayne, Cheap Trick, etc; Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival (2007) in Chicago (too many cool artists to list,) Ben Folds/Ben Folds Five (MANY shows,) Foo Fighters/Weezer at the Wolstein Center, Nine Inch Nails/Queens of the Stone Age at Gund, U2 at the Gund on the Elevation tour in 2001, and old school shows like Cracker at the Odeon in 1996, Sarah Mclachlan at Cain Park in 1995, Weezer at the Newport in Columbus in 1994 JUST before The Blue Album came out, Peter Gabriel at Richfield Coliseum in 1993 and again that summer at Buckeye Lake for WOMAD Festival, Van Halen and Alice in Chains at Blossom in 1991, and the list goes on and on and on..
FAVORITE BANDS:
That’s a long list too, but certainly Van Halen (love both eras, but I grew up with the Sammy-era stuff….but hey, I’ve seen em with DLR 3 times on this current tour, so cut me some slack!) Also love Nine Inch Nails, Tom Petty and everybody he hangs out with, Iron Maiden, Social Distortion, STP, Kathleen Edwards, Blue Rodeo, Clutch, The Ramones, The Lemonheads, Pearl Jam, R.E.M., Death Cab For Cutie, The B-52’s, Filter, Sonic Youth, Counting Crows, Fountains of Wayne, Helmet, Wilco/Golden Smog/The Jayhawks, The Rugburns, Silversun Pickups, U2, Sarah Mclachlan, The Smithereens, Nada Surf, Chimaira…..and, I could go on, but let’s cut it here.
Thanks for listening to 92.3 K-Rock!
